Russell Family Origins

According to one family legend, Alexander Russell was a Presbyterian minister who secretly harbored Jesuit priests. He was caught and thrown into prison, where he died. His widow fled with her four children to a ship bound for Canada, but she died during the voyage. The four children were placed in a Catholic orphanage in Canada's Quebec Province, and that is how they came to be reared as Catholics. The story is probably apocryphal.

According to another family tradition, both parents left Ireland for Canada, but the mother died during the voyage. The other children grew up in their father's household in Quebec Province.
